Town Meeting Postpones Park Land Acquisition Due To Missing Appraisal Technicality

Key Points

  • Land acquisition for a new park was delayed due to a missing formal appraisal.
  • Sellers expressed frustration, noting the price was below a previously agreed-upon 2018 figure.
  • The Select Board maintains support for the project once technical compliance is met.

Special Town Meeting voters opted to indefinitely postpone Article 5, which sought the acquisition of land for a new town park, following a motion by the Select Board. The delay was attributed to a missing formal appraisal and a pending review by the Community Preservation Committee (CPC), which town officials described as necessary technical steps for compliance.

The postponement was met with frustration from Austin Burch, a representative for the heirs of the property. Burch noted that the sellers had reached a price agreement lower than a previous 2018 deal with the town. I don't understand what the holdup is today, Burch told the assembly, highlighting the long-standing nature of the negotiations.

Select Board Chair Andrew Goodrich reassured the public and the sellers that the town remains supportive of the purchase despite the procedural setback. The issue is more we don't have an appraisal yet... This is more of a technical issue. We will be back, Goodrich said. The delay follows a broader town trend of prioritizing universal ADA access and park aesthetics, as seen in the ongoing Pier 44 redevelopment project.

Motion: I move to indefinitely postpone Article 5.
