Scituate Approves $27 Million North Scituate Sewer Expansion To Spark Business Growth

Key Points

  • The $27 million project aims to extend sewer service to North Scituate to foster economic development.
  • Officials secured a 1.8% interest rate and state grants to reduce the local tax burden.
  • The project is viewed as a long-term solution for growing the business tax base.

Town Meeting voters approved a major $27 million investment for the expansion of sewer infrastructure in North Scituate under Article 6 of the Special Town Meeting warrant. The project, which involves extending sewer pipes to the area, has been a topic of municipal discussion since the 1960s and is seen as a cornerstone for local economic revitalization.

Select Board Chair Andrew Goodrich urged voters to capitalize on a favorable 1.8% interest rate for the borrowing. He noted that the town has already secured state funding that will save Scituate between $5 million and $8 million in project costs. This aligns with the town's recent success in securing a $5 million MassWorks grant specifically for North Scituate sewer construction to minimize the impact on municipal bonding.

Santiago Lopez Mora, representing the Economic Development Commission (EDC), spoke in favor of the appropriation, arguing that the expansion is vital for the town's residential tax base. This expansion is an opportunity for the economic growth that is central to that mission... new growth will create an opportunity for new business tax revenues, Mora said. The expansion is expected to provide significant relief to the business district and encourage new commercial development.
